The Bellingham Police Department maintains two teams of two Bicycle Officers each. They are responsible for responding, in the downtown area, to patrol calls. In addition to regular patrol calls they conduct proactive policing in the downtown area, parks, trails, greenway, and nearby neighborhoods. This includes assisting citizens with directions, contacting shop owners and employees about the issues they see in the area, enforcing public nuisance laws such as drinking alcohol in public, disorderly conduct, as well as other violations and maintaining a positive presence in the downtown area. The Bicycle Officers spend considerable time interacting with the public and attend many public events and community meetings. Outside of their regular duties listed above they are tasked to assist on calls where patrol vehicles may not have access such as missing persons and fleeing suspects.
